Hazardous waste
TV and monitor recycling
Old TVs and monitors contain lead and mercury. We make sure every screen is collected securely and recycled by a specialist, with hazardous waste paperwork.
Why screens need special treatment
Flat screens have replaced CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions and monitors, but millions of CRTs are still in the UK. When they stop working or reach the end of their life, they must be recycled as hazardous waste, because the glass in the screen contains lead that can pollute the environment.
Older flat-screen TVs and monitors contain hazardous material too, including mercury in their backlights, so they also need correct disposal.
Specialist recycling in Kent
We work closely with a Kent company that leads the world in recycling CRT technology. It was the first company in the world to design a process for removing the lead from CRT glass. It also dismantles flat screens to remove the mercury tubes safely.
